Rossall Fives

Rossall Fives

Fives is a game that is similar to squash but played with your hands and not a racquet. There are in the region of 100 schools that have courts in the UK and in total there are approximately 4000 adults playing nationally. Courts can be found globally too with a number in Switzerland, Africa, Malaysia and India to name just a few.

Rossall fives (atypical Winchester fives) is a unique version of the game. It is said to be a ‘hybrid’ between the three main codes of Eton, Rugby and Winchester Fives. At Rossall we are fortunate to have 8 Victorian courts which have recently been refurbished by the Rossall Foundation, which has aided the sports recent revival.

The school enters the Rugby Fives National’s held at St. Paul’s and Winchester Fives national events where we have enjoyed much success in recent years (See Honours section). Rossall is also proud to host its own National tournament annually in October which attracts competitors from all over the country.

All pupils are given an opportunity to play the game when they arrive at the school and many chose to continue the game throughout their time at Rossall.

U13 National Fives report

Rossall enjoyed another successful weekend at St. Paul’s by reaching the National Doubles final eventually losing to a talented pair from Derby Moor. The Rossall first pair of Tom Ardron and Tom Morrison beat Sutton Valence, Merchant Taylors’, Blundell’s and the Pilgrim School Winchester on their way to the Final. Derby were physically too strong and brushed the Rossallian pair aside easily winning the final 11-3, 11-3.

It was a great day in the plate competition for the Rossall second pair of Harry Andrews & Ben Hockings. Both played above themselves to win a gruelling final over the Pilgrims school second pair 11-7 having at one stage been 7-3 down.

In the singles Tom Ardron was superb in winning 6 out of 7 of his group games and eventually lost in the semi-final to a talented player from Alleyn’s school 6-11. Harry Andrews played well to reach the Quarter-Final’s losing to the eventual runner up 11-5.

All boys who went were superb. It was particularly pleasing to see the young pair of Jonny Lee and David Trapnell gain valuable experience for the competition next year.

A final thank you to the following parents for their valuable support:
