Sumner Sprint

In the annual senior school Sumner Sprint some of the school records tumbled.

In Year 7 - the record was held by Dale Fisher set in 2006. Both James Boyd and Sam Braidford broke that record. The current record of 32.89 is held by Sam slicing almost 3 seconds off the previous time.

Year 8 girls produced a similar scenario. Again the record was set in 2006 by Pheobe Heath-Abbott. Three of our athletes broke that record - Georgina Maycock, Laura Brannigan and Katie Brannigan. Breaking the record by over 3.5 seconds Katie is the new holder

at 35.42

The whole school record is held by Charles Hough set in 2007 in a time of 30.06.

Luke Williams came very close to breaking that record in a time of 30.85.

Rossall 1st XI vs MCC (home)

MCC won by 18 runs

.

At 113-5 the 1st XI were cruising to what appeared to be a remarkable victory. However a desperately unlucky run out altered the outcome of the game and eventually the MCC won with 5 balls to spare. The bowling display was one of the best in recent memory as Toby Lester (3-40) bowled with good pace and accuracy as he ripped out the MCC top order. Aided well by some impressive fielding and the Rossall spinners; Chris Metcalfe (1-6) & Charles Andrews (2-28); meant the MCC headed into lunch in trouble at 95-6. The 1st XI picked up two further wickets in the afternoon and the MCC eventually declared after 57 Overs on 154-8. In reply the loss of wickets at critical moments cost the 1st XI dear in a valiant run chase – Philip Rimmer stroked the ball to all parts of the ground scoring a majestic 65. Having survived the 20 Overs within the last hour there was time for one more over resulting in Christoph Gaete Von Wersebe being cleaned bowled with 5 balls to go. Another great game in what is turning out to be a promising season for the 1st XI.

Man of the match: Philip Rimmer

Rossall 1st XI vs St. Bees (away)

Rossall won by 97 runs

A quite brilliant piece of captaincy won the game on a damp day up in Cumbria. Having been put into to bat on a green track the 1st XI openers put on 120 in 24 Overs – Luke Williams dismissed for a patient 55. James Wilson was the star of the show as he played himself back into form with an excellent 80* that included 8 boundaries. With rain around the message from the dressing room was to accelerate and see where the team were at lunch. During the interval captain Chris Metcalfe made the brave decision of declaring after just 32 overs with the XI on 180-2. It soon paid off as St. Bees were in trouble at 11-3 off 7 Overs (Toby Lester 2-18) before a brave partnership threatened to hold the 1st XI up in their bid to win the game. The spin twins of Chris Metcalfe (4-22) and Charles Andrews (2-21) ripped through the middle and lower order dismissing the home side for just 83 ten minute before tea. The heavens opened as the 1st XI left St. Bees – A great result under the circumstances.

Man of the Match: James Wilson

2nd XI Vs King Williams College 1st XI (Rossall 110-7, KWC 111-7 – Lost by 3 Wickets)

A youthful and improving 2nd XI put in an excellent performance against King Williams College 1st XI from the Isle of Man. Having been put into bat Jack Morrison stroked the ball to all parts with a fine 49 and was supported well by Joshua Landmann and Frazer Forster as the 2nd XI reached 110-7 off their 30 Overs. In reply King Williams were in trouble at 76-6 as Joshua Landmann took 4-19 and Jack Morrison 2-9 – However the extra strength in depth in the King Williams 1st XI saw them home with 4 overs and 3 wickets in hand.

U14 Vs St. Bees U15 (St. Bees 108, Rossall 99 – Lost by 9 runs)

The U14 team threw away the opportunity of securing their second victory of the season falling agonisingly short of the target. St. Bees were put into bat and were bowled out for 108 mainly thanks to an excellent spell of bowling from Stephen Kane 4-29 and Harry Mawer 3-14. In reply wickets at regular intervals hampered the run chase despite a typically aggressive innings from Harley Taylor (30) as the U14’s fell short by 8 runs.

J1XI Vs St. Bees U13 (Rossall 223-2, St. Bees 31-5 – Draw)

This game will be remembered mainly for Tom Ardon’s brilliant hundred and an impressive batting display from the Rossall side. Tom Ardron finished unbeaten on 108* which included an incredible 24 boundaries. Tom Morrison (51*) and Oliver Hughes (17) chipped in as the boys amassed 223-2 in 30 Overs. In reply St. Bees never went for the victory and were soon in trouble as a result of some hostile bowling from Tom Morrison 2-14 and Jonny Lee 2-6. At the end of the time allowed St. Bees held on for a draw on 30-6.

Ladies 1st XI Vs Giggleswick 1st XI (Giggleswick 86-8, Rossall 87-0 – Won by 10 wickets)

A very young, inexperienced and nervous Rossall School Ladies 1st XI Cricket Team faced Giggleswick School's 1st XI at Rossall on Saturday 1st May. Giggleswick won the toss and elected to bat, much to Rossall's relief. Only one of Rossall’s bowlers had ever played cricket before, but managed to restrict Giggleswick to 86 for 8 in their 20 overs. Hannah Jenkinson took 3 wickets for 6 runs - All 3 wickets coming in her last over. Danielle Waistle in her first game took 2 for 15. Both of Rossall's opening batters were playing in their first games, but despite their inexperience they were still out in the middle in the 13th over when Rossall reached their target. Emily Jackson was 30 not out and Josie Guthrie 20 not out. This was a truly excellent team effort from a group of players containing only one player who had played any cricket previously. Whilst there is room for improvement the girls are very much looking forward to their next game which will be against Arnold next Friday at Rossall.

Fencing competion

Rossall School Modern Pentathlon Club

Success at Lancashire Schools Fencing Championships

Athletes from Rossall School Modern Pentathlon Club competed at the Lancashire Schools Fencing Championships last weekend with some spectacular results. 12 year old David Trapnell fenced in 2 separate weapon categories, the Foil and Epee in the U/14 age group, the Foil and Epee. David is known as an accomplished Foilist and did very well to finish in 5th place.

#.

However, GB Coach Mike Thornton who helps coaching the local World Class Programme Athletes with National Coach Istvan Gallai has been bringing David along with the Epee and it was with this weapon that David took 2nd in the Championships in his age group, a fantastic achievement.

.

The Shaw sisters Alex and Katie fenced in the U/20 and U/17 age groups respectively, both demonstrating excellent fencing skills and further development as fencers. Following some tough fights both made the final match and won convincingly, a rewarding day for Alex and Katie bringing home 2 championship titles.

.

In the U/20 men’s category the Club was represented by Steven Mason. All through the competition Steven swept aside the opposition and cruised through to take the U/20 championship title.

.

Overall an excellent day for the Rossall School Pentathlon Club and all the hard work that the athletes and coaches put in was well rewarded. Club membership is open to all North West Pentathletes Athletes, we provide a full fencing, shooting, combined event and swimming training programme. Contact Stewart Shaw at sshaw@caterware.co.uk

Rossall win National Fives competion

Rossall teacher and Fives coach Tom Root, proudly displays the national trophies watched by the school’s ‘fantastic fives’ champions, left to right: Luke Williams, Christopher Metcalfe and Jack Morrison.

Success in the Palm of their Hands

Newly crowned world heavyweight boxing champion, David Haye may have made a decent fist of his assault on the world title by beating Russian giant, Nikolai Valuev, but nearer to home several pupils at one of the region’s leading independent schools have also had a hand in a major sporting triumph that sees a national title coming to the North West for the first time.

.

Thankfully there wasn’t a broken hand in sight as pupils from Rossall rose to the top of the pile in the National Fives Championships, taking the Open Competition title and also winning the U-15 trophy, with impressive victories over some of the most competitive schools in the one of the country’s oldest sports.

.

Over 100 schools entered this year’s event and in the Open competition, the Rossall pairing of Christopher Metcalfe, 17, and Luke Williams, 14, went through all stages unbeaten, winning their group and dropping only five points before a quarter final victory against Oundle School 1, followed by a comfortable win against St Olave’s 3 of London in the semis. In the final, Metcalfe and Williams met last year’s champions, St Olave’s 1, running out 15-7 winners, following some excellent points-winning shots from both boys. Their victory sees the trophy coming to Rossall for the first time in the school’s history.

.

In the U-15 national competition, Luke Williams featured again, this time paired with partner, Jack Morrison, 15. Their final opponents were St Olave’s U-15 first team who made a tight match of it before some neat, cross-court shots from Williams enabled Rossall to claim a 15-11 victory and a second piece of silverware.

.

In a busy competition for Williams, he also reached the final of the national U-15 singles, losing narrowly to first seed, Weston, of Wolverhampton Grammar School, 15-13. Metcalfe also came close in the Open singles, falling 15-12 at the semi final stage to eventual winner, Hewlett of St Olave’s.

.

In the U-13 age category, Rossall’s Tom Morrison and Harry Andrews, both 12, reached the final of the plate competition, showing a promising future for the ancient sport of Fives on the Fylde Coast.

.

School Fives coach; Tom Root believes that Rossall’s emergence as a national force is down to the enhanced facilities at the School, where eight fully covered courts have been refurbished, giving the school the largest facility of its kind in Britain.

.

Says Root: “Fives is a fantastic sport, which for the uninitiated is similar to squash, with shots being played with the hand rather than with racquets. Along with its close companion, Handball, it’s becoming increasingly popular amongst school children in both independent and state schools, so much so that we plan to run coaching courses here at school.”

.

Rossall Fives, which is an amalgam of Eton and Winchester Fives, has been played at the school since Victorian times and is a great spectator sport as well as fiercely competitive and demanding. Now, with more doubles and singles players donning the special padded gloves and taking to the school’s refurbished courts it is conceivable that the Rossall will be a regular challenger for the national title.

.

Added Root: “To win in one national age group is good, but to win in two and have finalists in the singles and junior pairs this year is testament to the potential here at Rossall for years to come. Our next goal will be the world championships, which will be an even bigger test for our boys, but one they’ll relish, as nothing seems to faze them, which is why we’ve won our first titles so convincingly. Our progression is great for the school and I hope it will help to inspire more children from across Wyre and Fylde to consider playing Fives.”

Hockey Roundup

Last term was the most successful in recent years for Rossall 1st XI. The boys played entertaining hockey and managed to win eight games in a row, including a 3-1 victory against the reigning champions Merchant Taylors Crosby. The boys scored 23 goals and conceded only 5. The remarkable feat is that 19 of the 23 goals were scored by Y10s. This shows that Rossall could be the dominant team in the Lancashire League for a while. With last years Y7,8 and 9 teams finishing the season unbeaten Hockey goes from strength to strength. The U15s are the reigning North of England Champions and the Under 16s the Lancashire Champions.

It has been an excellent first half of the football season for 1st XI. After the 8-2 loss in the pre-season game against the local club side many members of the 1st XI squad and coaching staff were encouraged to keep their ‘heads up’!

5 days later Rossall defeated their local rivals Arnold 3-1 in a game that could have been very different. After giving the ball away cheaply too often, Rossall found themselves 1-0 down as Arnold capitalised on their early pressure. But the equaliser came just before half time through Harry Southern. After the break Rossall dominated for large periods of the game before 2 wonder goals in the space of five minutes, first from Florian Pottinger and second from the influential Christoph Gaete.

The Saturday after the pleasing victory saw the 1st XI
travel to Shrewsbury to play their 5th XI. It is important to point out that Shrewsbury have 8 XI’s in the sixth form alone!!! Rossall dominated the game for long periods and were comfortably 2-0 thanks to goals from Harry Southern and Christopher Von Rosen. Shrewsbury pulled level after 5 minutes of madness but Rossall scored three times in the last 10 minutes with goals from Christoph Gaete (screamer from 40 yards), Kim Woo and Dexter Seow. Final score 5-2.

Bolton brought their 3rd XI on open morning to play the ever improving 1st XI and were easily beaten 11-2 – there were plenty of goal scorers that day, but it was Christoph Gaete’s hat trick that will stick long in the memory.

10 days later Bolton brought their 2nd XI up and got their revenge winning an excellent match 5-2. Rossall were 2-0 down after 17 minutes but were soon level thanks to Christoph Gaete (who impressed the ex-Newcastle manager Ian Dowie watching on the side). The game was an end to end classic and despite the score line being one sided as the 1st XI conceded 3 goasl in the last 5 minutes.

One of the most pleasing performances came at the ‘auld enemy’ Stonyhurst. Rossall were playing some super football on the Stonyhurst carpet of a pitch before again finding themselves 1-0 down. Rossall continued to dominate against a strong team and were soon leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Harry Southern and Christoph Gaete. Stonyhurst luckily equalised on the stroke of half time leaving the game 2-2 at the break. Rossall stretched their lead after the break with goals coming from Florian Pottinger and Christoph Gaete making the score 4-2 to Rossall midway through the 2nd half. Slack defending resulted in a Stony score causing the last 5 minutes to be nerve-racking – the final score 4-3 to Rossall.

The last time Shrewsbury visited Rossall to play a game of association football was in the 1920’s so last Wednesday proved to be an exciting moment for the Rossall 1st XI. The 1st XI started poorly and were soon 2-0 down from a combination of atrocious conditions and comic defensive errors. Eventually the Rossall central midfielder pairing of Christopher Von Rosen and Jacob Hodgson got a grip of the game and set up Christoph Gaete for his 13th goal (in 7 games) of the season. Further chances went begging and the half time score was 2-1 to Shrewsbury. After some strong words at half time Rossall started the better but were 3-1 down thanks to super counter-attack from the Shrewsbury side. Christopher Von Rosen pulled a goal back after a flowing move, but it was again Christoph Gaete who was at the far post to tap in the equaliser. Some more defensive blunders from the home side gifted Shrewsbury the lead once more. However the turning point proved to be a triple save from Craig Mitchell in the Rossall goal as a quick counter attack from the resulting corner resulted in the equaliser coming from Jacob Hodgson. The final score 4-4 – a great advert for school boy football!

The final game so far this season was at QEGS Blackburn. Rossall were again 2-0 down before getting into gear. Jacob Hodgson scored just before half time to make it 2-1 at the break. At tactical change from 4-4-2 to 5-3-2 at the break saw Rossall play with more freedom and further goals from Christoph Gaete(2) and Christopher Von Rosen resulted in the final score being 4-2 – worthy winners yet again.

Well done to all – tour review to follow…

Goal scorers so far:

Christoph Gaete 14
Florian Pottinger 6
Jacob Hodgson 3
Christopher von Rosen 3
Harry Southern 3
Dexter Seow 2

MEET OLIVER THE WARRIOR

Rossall U14s rugby welcomes the addition of Oliver Murray, who joined us this term in Spread Eagle House.

.

Oliver has plenty to celebrate at the moment, after being accepted on to the Wigan Warriors RL under 14 training scholarship scheme.

.

He was presented with his Wigan shirt by head coach Brian Noble at an awards ceremony at the JJB Stadium.

Oliver began playing for Fylde RUFC mini junior section at the age of six before going to Preston Grasshoppers.  And while playing for the Lancashire Rugby League team  he was spotted by Wigan scout Bill Ashurst.

Oliver plays for the famous Wigan St Patricks team and was later selected for the Wigan and Leigh service area team.

His passion has not just been for rugby league but union as well - he was selected for the North Lancashire district and then moved on to schools of rugby training at Sale Sharks RUFC.

.

At Wigan, Oliver is now under the watchful eye of Warriors' head scholarship coach Kris Radlinski, the former Great Britain full-back.

Rossall 1st XV Pre-Season Tour - Scotland

In late August, the 1st XV rugby squad met at Rossall for a pre-season training camp and tour.

.

After a few days of fitness, team-building and tactical work, we set off to Scotland where we had two matches scheduled.

.

We arrived into Edinburgh amid the excitement of the last weekend of the Festiva.  Fettes College 2nd XV were our first opponents.  The 1st XV played hard and came away with a well deserved win 28-0.

.

The second match of the tour was against Morrison's Academy in Perthshire.  The match was well contested to the end but Rossall could not match the physical intensity of the Scottish boys and lost 10 - 41.

.

The tour was great fun and has put us in fantastic spirit for a very busy season.

Rossall is Fifth Element in Bid for Olympic Gold

In the bid for Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016, Britain’s sporting hierarchy have been searching for an elusive fifth element…that special something to give them an edge over the competition…and with a bit of luck they appear to have uncovered it right here on the Fylde Coast.

.

The discovery of our terrific campus of 160 acres and its varied range of sports facilities have been pure gold for Pentathlon GB, the governing body for Britain’s Modern Pentathlon and it’s a find that could see Rossall eventually becoming a national centre of excellence for Pentathlon…and the Fylde Coast, a lure for Britain’s top athletes.

Rossall are North of England Champions

Although losing out by the narrowest margin in the quarter final of the English National Hockey Championships 2-1 to Trent College, the U-14’s boys’ team still managed to finish the season as Lancashire, North West and North of England Champions, rounding off an excellent campaign which saw them scoring 100 goals and conceding only ten.

.

Prior to the national quarter finals, Rossall’s U-14’s travelled to Manchester’s Commonwealth Stadium to take on and beat St Peter’s, York 1-0 in the North of England Championship; a score line that did not reflect Rossall’s total dominance of the game from start to finish. They entered the game after a run of 13 straight victories, including a 10-0 demolition of local rivals King Edward & Queen Mary’s, Lytham.

.

Rossall’s England international, Louis Weir, bagged the winner – a reverse hit into the bottom corner - with fifteen minutes remaining, following a frustrating first half in which Rossall laid siege to the St Peter’s goal but met with a man of the match performance from the Yorkshire school’s goalkeeper to thwart their efforts.

.

Lancashire county player, Luke Williams, almost broke the deadlock in the 40th minute with a wonderful strike that clipped the outside of the St Peter’s goal post. Even four short corners in quick succession couldn’t help Rossall find the net and the Yorkshire school seemed content to simply frustrate Rossall’s talented attack, without ever showing ambition to take the game out of their own half.

.

In the national quarter final against a Trent College side unbeaten in two years, Rossall had to come back from a goal down, with Louis Weir once again showing why he’s caught the eye of the England selectors, with a neat strike to equalize, only to see a deflected goal put them out of the competition, with three minutes on remaining on the clock.

.

Had Rossall progressed to the semi finals, the opponents would have been England’s most successful hockey school, Millfield of Somerset, who ironically, Rossall beat convincingly on a recent Somerset tour in which the Fleetwood School’s U-12’s, 13’s and 14’s enjoyed a clean sweep of victories, rounded off with Rossall U-14’s playing and beating Millfield’s U-15 team.

.

In other age groups, Rossall’s U-16 boys’ hockey team finished the season as Lancashire champions, whilst the School’s first XI finished a close second to Merchant Taylors of Crosby in the Lancashire County League. There was better news though for Rossall’s U-18 girls’ hockey team who also finished the season as winners of the Lancashire Ladies U-19 Cup, the first time in the Cup’s 15 year history. Their victory capped off one of the most successful seasons in many years for the Fleetwood school and indicates a strengthening of the sport on campus.

.

In the final games of the boys’ season against KEQM School, Lytham, Rossall boys U-12A team won 5-1, the U-12B won 10-0 and the U-13/U14s ran out 6-0 winners.

-

Commenting on this season’s successes, Rossall’s director of sport, Katie Lee said: “This year has been remarkable in terms of performances from boys and girls in all age groups. The children have worked extremely hard, but many also have displayed real natural talent. Our girls and boys have sent a message to all other schools this season, which says that Rossall is stronger than ever in competition and we’re already looking forward to next season to see if we can go all the way to the national finals in more than one age group. I don’t know if we’ll do it, but the generation of players we have here at the moment are so gifted I doubt we’ll have a better opportunity.”

Will is selected to represent the North West's U13 Hockey Team

Will to Win

Hockey’s a family affair for Singleton schoolboy, Will Parker, who has followed in the footsteps of big sister Francesca by winning a place on the North West U-13 hockey team, to add to his appearances for Lancashire at U-13, U-14 and U-15 levels.

Will, 13 and captain of Rossall's U-13 hockey team, has already tasted success at school level by steering his side to victory earlier this season in the North of England U-13 Cup, which they won without conceding a goal. His will to win has also seen his school team winning an U-14 age group tournament at Millfield School in Somerset, beating leading hockey schools, Merchant Taylors, Crosby; Liverpool College and King’s School, Macclesfield along the way.

In his first outing in defence for the North West, Will stopped three certain goals for the opposition and helped his side knock up four wins against, Wales, Scotland, the North East and Midlands, before eventually succumbing to tournament favourites the South East. And, in October this year he’ll captain a Rossall team in competition in Barcelona, where the school will come up against tough and experienced Spanish opposition.

Rossall’s master in charge of boys’ hockey, Anthony Fairhurst is sure that Will could follow sister Francesca and one day compete for a place in the national team. He commented: “Will is an exceptional player and a fine captain, despite his tender years, and I’m sure his experience with the North West will help his game with us. In fact, I’d go as far as saying he’ll help us to national success next year, because he’s got the talent and a great team around him.”
Francesca Parker, also a Rossall School pupil, has represented Lancashire, the North West and the North of England U-17’s in competition. She is also a member of Preston Ladies hockey team.

Fran Parker selected for U18s and training with U21s in national hockey

And more from Francesca...

Francesca was selected for the U18 North of England Hockey  team in the recent round of Nationals for the newly structured England Hockey Futures Cup. (Fran is middle row 3rd from the left)

.

Whilst the Pennine Pumas (North) came Fourth it did not reflect fully the performances given. Francesca was spotted by the North U21 Selectors and has been asked to attend the U21 development squad.

.

This is a massive step up as the majority of the players are 2nd and 3rd Year University Students and National League players.

Bradley is selected to train with Blackpool FC's Youth Academy

Bradley's Tangerine Dream

Football mad schoolboy Bradley is only eight years old, but he’s a step closer to achieving his dream and it’s a tangerine one!

The football prowess of Junior School pupil, Bradley has been spotted by Blackpool FC’s scouting network and earned the Thornton boy a place at the Blackpool Youth Academy, where he’ll get a chance to develop his football skills under the watchful eye of the Club’s coaching staff to see if he progresses through the schoolboy ranks.

Like many boys of his age Bradley is of slight build, but even at this age likes to tackle and is skilful on the ball. He currently plays in defence, although his hero is Liverpool and Spain hero, Fernando Torres, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he eventually developed into a fine forward.

Despite being a Liverpool fan Bradley follows Blackpool and may one day have to choose an allegiance if the Seasiders eventually gain promotion to the Premier League. He said: It’s great to be able to learn at the academy. It’s also fun, because I love to play football all the time and I want to be a professional player, but my dad says I have to pass my exams when I get older before I can choose.”

Junior School sports teacher Lawrence Condon believes Bradley has potential. He commented: “We’ve only taken up football recently at Rossall, because our tradition has always been rugby, but just watching Bradley proves he’s got ability and he’s in his element when he’s kicking a ball. He’s also a good academically, so hopefully, if the football progresses he’ll have options when he gets older.”

Rossall Rugby

Rugby

On Saturday 22nd of November, the U-15 rugby team travelled to QEGS Blackburn. It was somewhat of a homecoming for the coach, Mr Bradley, as he was a pupil at QEGS many years ago.

.

The Rossall team was strong and agile in every department. Again, in the forwards, teams have found it difficult to cope with the pace and power of Tom Walsh, Ollie Cross and the captain Asa Watson. These three caused havoc in the QEGS pack as they were at a loss on how to stop them.

.

The forwards played well as a unit, rucking strongly and winning ball against the head in the scrum. The backs, ably marshalled by Jack Bradley and Toby Holder-Williams were too much for the QEGS opposition. They found it difficult to cope with the pace and the lines which the Rossall backs were running and as a consequence, gaps appeared where the blistering pace of Dale Fisher could be unleashed. Jack Bradley had a great morning with the boot, scoring one try and taking ten conversions; twenty five points for one player in a game is a new record for us.

QEGS were a handful at times, scoring a beautiful break-away try, but the morning belonged to Rossall who ran out winners 75 points to 5. I would like to congratulate the boys on the result and to again thank the parents for their loyal support.

The Under 14s went to Barcelona playing on pitches that had been used in the Barcelona Olympics and competed very well against the Spanish sides.

.

The Under 14s played 4 games. They lost the first one 1-3, drew the second 0-0, won the third 1-0 and the fourth 2-0. In preparation for the tour they defeated Lancashire Girls Under 17s 1-0.

.

The under 13s lost the first game 4-1 against older opposition, drew the next two games 1-1 and won the fourth 7-0. 30 boys went on tour and played against some very talented opposition and on some wonderful water based pitches.

.

The Rossall sides contained 7 boys who have represented the county in the last twelve months and many other boys are awaiting selection. I am confident the school will have at least 10 boys from just the Middle School representing the county by the end of the season. To help their development we have toured Barcelona and have entered a number of indoor and outdoor hockey competitions, where we have a great chance of being successful. Having won two tournaments last year the boys have every chance of performing to an even higher standard this season. We are also touring the South of England with the Under 13 and 14s team to play the best hockey schools in the country.

"Old Girls'" Hockey Challenge

For the first time this year we had an “Old Girls” hockey match against the 1st XI to conclude the 1st XI’s pre-season training. It was fantastic to see so many old girls - who tried to lull us into a false sense of security by claiming they hadn’t played hockey since they left school – their skill and fitness certainly didn’t confirm this!!

.

With 12 players (after Dana Takeuchi kindly “volunteered” her services – debuting at the game of hockey) the Old Girls, comprising of four ex-school hockey captains, gave the young 1st XI a very tough match. Despite their youth , the 1st XI came out as 3 – 1 winners. We would like to make this a permanent fixture in the calendar, and those Old Girls who were unable to make it this year – put next year's date in your diary now – Sunday 31st August 2008.

.

My thanks to all the Old Girls who dusted off their sticks to play it really was a very enjoyable day and I look forward to seeing you all again next year!
