Y5 Trip to Winmarleigh

We welcome the Year 5’s (plus Mr Condon and Mrs Mitchell) back from their activity weekend at Winmarleigh Hall.

.

They had a fantastic time, as ever, and returned with tales of bravery at attempting the zip wire or how wet they got canoeing! Their enjoyment (and slight tiredness) was there for all to see on their faces.

.

They represented Rossall exceptionally well with their general behaviour and manners—well done to them all! I do also thank the accompanying staff who give up their own family time to ensure such trips can go ahead.

Exploring in Science in our Year 5 Unit of Inquiry: Reversible and Irreversible Changes

Unit of Inquiry:
Reversible and Irreversible Changes

In our Unit of Inquiry we have been looking at solids, liquid and gases and irreversible and reversible changes. The class split up into groups and did an experiment about sugar and water. From that experiment we found out that a sugar or salt solution can evaporate leaving just the solid.

Year 5C research Famous Explorers

Unit of Inquiry:
Exploration

This half term 5C have been learning about famous explorers such as Christopher Columbus - the first European to sail to america.

.

We also learned about Sir Francis Drake, a famous sailor, and Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.

.

Each person chose one famous explorer and researched them.  Quito and Lewis researched Ferdinand Magellan and found out that he went to sea in 1505!

.

We are sure we are really going to enjoy this unit!

5C make rockets: whose will go the highest?

Creation and Design of Rockets

This term we have been learning about the creation and design of rockets.  This is linked to our new Unit of Inquiry on Exploratin.  By using various materials we have been set a task to design and create a rocket ready to shoot up into the air and see whose goes the highest!

.

We are all really excited about this topic and hoping our rockets will be successful!

5C learned about playscripts: this one is calle "My Fur Coat"

Playscripts

This half term 5C have really enjoyed writing and learning about playscripts.  One was called "The Fur Coat".  It was really funny because the character of Gran was pretty deaf and kept mishearing her Grandaughter (just like my Gran!)

.

We had to script out own ending, which was great fun.

Year 5 re-enact the poem The Dragon of Death using Fergul the class shark as the dragon

Photo showing Fergul the Class Shark as the Dragon of Death!

Poetry

This term we have been learning about poetry for our English topic. As a class we all read a poem called the Dragon of Death, which is about a seven headed dragon who guards a treasure of infinite worth. We all enjoyed continuing the poem with our own verses about a hero attempting to defeat it. These are the first two verses of Chase’s poem: -

I rode deep into the dark damp forest

On a quest to turn treasure into cash

But first I had to outwit the seven headed dragon

Before he turned my body into ash.

But suddenly my noble steed came to very sharp halt

I found myself flying into the air

Wondering what on earth was happening

As I hurtled towards the dragon’s lair …………

Year 5 read a poem, called Dragon of Death, which we all really enjoyed. We then performed our poems using Fergul (the Class shark) as the dragon. We all loved acting it out with lots of laughter. Unfortunately Fergul has not recovered from the attack!

This term 5C have been studying poetry. We each selected one poem we liked and presented it to the other children. After we read it out to the class we explained why we liked the poem! I chose Peter Plunkett’s Trumpet because it reminds me of really annoying friends, because later on in the poem
Peter’s friend Paul gets so annoyed with Peter playing his trumpet, that he shoves the trumpet in his ear!!

I chose my poem because it is funny and silly. It has got a good rhyming pattern and a good choice of words in it and my favourite bit is that he wears a cat on top of his head!

Visit to Wyre Borough Council

Year 5 researched local facilities in Cleveleys. They designed a questionnaire and asked members of the public walking up and down the high street in Cleveleys town centre. They asked what their opinion was of the facilities available in Cleveleys and what sort of things they would like to see more of. The teachers received a really positive response about how well behaved the children were and how pleasing they were to meet. Results showed that the public thought some of the money for the sea wall would be better spent on renovation and regeneration of the high street and the surrounding area.

The results of the survey were delivered in form of letters to the Planning office at the Council. The Director of Planning at the Council was so impressed with the project and the letters that he invited them to go visit him at Wyre Borough Council

Wonderful Winmarleigh

At 12.30pm on Friday 3rd October, my class 5C, travelled by school minibus to Winmarleigh to start our adventure weekend away. I was excited and nervous all at the same time. We arrived and we were given ten minutes to find our room, make our beds and change into activity clothes and shoes. With everyone so excited to begin, this was not a problem.

We had a great afternoon and the ICT activity of making a music video and dancing was my favourite. We all knew we had a midnight walk activity to look forward to but what we didn’t know was that the ‘walk’ turned out to be an obstacle course in the dark, spooky woods! The final surprise was that we had to do it blindfolded. Awesome!

It rained on Saturday but this did not dampen our spirits or stop us doing anything. We tackled the zip wire, took part in bouldering games and went canoeing. Saturday finished off with a disco which I can say we all enjoyed.

Our first chore on Sunday morning, our final morning, was to strip our beds and pack our bags. All this before 8.00am!! Thankfully we crammed loads of things into those last hours. We abseiled (fantastic!), created special effects for our music videos (cool!) and finally had a lesson in archery (amazing!).

It was time to leave and head for home but I don't think anybody wanted to. The whole class had a great time and wanted to stay for more.

Thank you to Mr Condon and Mrs Mitchell (and when are we going back?)
