Mrs Katie Lee, Rossall's new Head of Junior, Infant and Nursery Schools

New Head for Rossall Juniors

One of Rossall’s most popular teachers is the new head of Rossall Juniors, Infants and Nursery Schools, following the departure of outgoing Head, Simon James, to take up a similar post in the South of England.  We wish him well.

.

Katie Lee, hasmoved into the post from her current role as director of sport, a position she has held since 2003. One of Rossall’s longest-serving academics, she joined in 1992 from Blackpool and the Fylde College, where she held the position of Head of Girls' Sport. In her time at Rossall she has also worked as Head of Girls' Sport, Head of House for junior and senior pupils and is past Chairman of Rossall Common Room and former Head of Pastoral Care.

.

Although hailing from South Yorkshire, Katie has lived on the Fylde coast since the 1980’s and is a well-known figure in education and amongst many local community interest groups, having been married to the late Blackpool Coroner, Sam Lee. Amongst her roles in the community is a directorship of Blackpool Grand Theatre Trust Board and a position as the Theatre’s child protection officer. She is also a school governor of Millfield Science and Performing Arts College in Thornton.

.

A career educationalist, Katie, of Stanley Park, holds a Masters Degree in education and is an advocate of the holistic approach to education practised at Rossall, which embraces, academic, physical and emotional needs of children. Commenting on her new appointment, Rossall School headmaster Dr Stephen Winkley said: “Katie possesses exceptional qualities and brings a wealth of experience and energy to the post. As a key figure on campus for a number of years, she is already well-known, liked by pupils and parents and fully immersed in the Rossall culture; therefore I’m sure she will be able to make an immediate impact in her new position.

.

“One of Katie’s primary roles will be to continue to develop our early years’ curriculum, which is based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years’ Programme and which has been highly successful since its introduction two years ago.”

Grandparents Afternoon

We welcomed Grandparents of all our Infant and Junior pupils to visit our wonderful school.

.

Our Infant and Junior pupils greeted grandparents and bounced off down the corridor showing off their contribution to the colourful wall displays, and then into the classrooms where the children showed off their workbooks and told of what they had been learning about in their PYP curriculum.

The heavens tried to open but didn’t hold our grandparents back!

Unicef Change for Change Day
Pyjamas in School!

UNICEF Day For Change has been set up to support children’s welfare and education in developing countries. This years chosen country is Mozambique.  However, half of the money we raise will also be sent to help children in Haiti, recovering from the devastating earthquake.

.

Every day in Mozambique, about 400 children under the age five die, mainly of preventable causes. One in two children lack safe drinking water and around one in three girls do not get the chance to attend primary school. UNICEF is changing children’s lives in Mozambique, but we need your help to do more. And we have all seen the terrible scenes in the wake of the Haiti earthquake.

.

As you can see from all the photos , we had great fun supporting UNICEF’s ‘Day for Change’ on Friday. This important arm of UNICEF’s work is this year supporting projects in Mozambique. However, we also felt some of the money we raised should support the relief work and the victims of the recent Haiti earthquake. When we asked the children what aspect of the school day they would like to ‘change’, their unanimous idea was a ‘pyjama day’!

.

Everyone entered into the spirit (including all the staff) and we enjoyed hot chocolate at break and a cake sale. Annabelle (Y5) also made and sold stickers to raise further money for the charity. Thanks to everyone’s generous support we will be able to send UNICEF a cheque for just over £400—a fantastic achievementso well done!

Simeon Wood visits Rossall Juniors

Simeon Wood Visits Rossall Juniors

We were fortunate enough to have a visiting professional
musician, Simeon Wood, perform in school. Simeon talked to us about all the wind instruments he plays and gave us a short concert! He also asked some children to have a go at playing the didgeridoo (?!) - not that successfully it has to be said!

.

Thanks again for Reverend Salt for arranging this for us!
