Mrs Katie Lee, Rossall Head of Junior, Infant and Nursery Schools

Notes from KML

This weekend is an important time of the year; Scholarship examinations for entry into Years 3 and 5 in September 2012. There has been tremendous interest for both year groups and the teachers will be busily marking into the afternoon on Saturday. Pupils applying for academic scholarships, if successful, will be invited back on Monday for an interview. Music auditions and sports trials will be held on Monday morning followed by an interview. I would like to wish all our internal candidates good luck on the day; they should just imagine it is a normal school day and enjoy it.

I am pleased to report that £1100 was raised at the Christmas Fair, many thanks to all the parents who assisted with this event. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and will now benefit from the funds.

.

Hopefully everyone did receive their newsletter by email; I have had no response to my request of last week. It would be most cost effective if parents would be happy to receive an electronic version rather than a paper copy. As from the first Friday in February, a paper copy of the Rossall Reporter will only be available on request.

.

OPEN DAY - We are holding an open afternoon on Thursday 29th March from 2.00pm. This will be a great opportunity for our current Pre School parents to visit the Reception class and have a talk to Mrs Senior. We hope that parents are seriously considering Rossall as an option, especially as the children are settled into their surroundings, are familiar with the teachers and enjoy the Rossall way of life. If parents have any queries please contact either Mrs Murray (01253 774228) or Mrs Lee (01253 774222)

SPEECH AND DRAMA NEWS (Report from Mrs Mistry)

24 students in Junior and Dragon took a variety of LAMDA exams this week. These included some Acting, some Speaking of Verse

and Prose and even a Devised Drama exam, which for those of you who don’t know involves 2 scenes on a given subject, practised,

but nevertheless improvised by the learner, not an easy task (well done Kirsty)!

.

The examiner, who has recently hosted an exam session as far away as Hong Kong, travelled from his home in Shropshire to take

the exams for us and commented that the children were “all lovely.”

Author Mark Walden visits Rossall

VISITING AUTHOR

We were very fortunate to welcome Mark

Walden to Rossall on Wednesday to address an audience of around 180 pupils from Juniors and Dragon along with pupils from local primary schools.

.

The children listened intently to Mark as he

explained how in fictional stories there is much said about the hero, but very little about the villain. Where do villains learn to be

bad and make all the contraptions for their evil trade? We heard how in his novels the villains are selected to attend a special school continuously for six years. They master the arts of

outwitting the ‘goodies’….not too many secrets were given away, but it did capture the imagination.

.

The series of ‘HIVE’ books

were available for purchase and were personalised by Mark.

SPORTS DINNER AND AWARDS IN MONDO’S

We held our first dinner on Thursday evening to make the various presentations and awards for sports players. As a reminder of all the season's successes there was slide show consisting of picture taken at sporting events throughout the year. After a buffet supper, the various awards and trophies were presented by Mrs Lee and Mr Condon. Sam and Ashley were on hand to assist in the proceedings. Full details of awards are listed below. I am sure there will be one or two disappointed players who didn't receive awards, but all players were acknowledged for their efforts and performance over the season. This new event will hopefully encourage all players to be motivated to receive such awards in the future. Congratulations to all our teams.

STUDENT COUNCIL INTERVIEWS A MP
(Report by Bradley and Imogen)

The Student Council met Mr Eric Ollerenshaw OBE, MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood.

.

We were prepared with lots of different questions that we were desperate to ask. He answered all our questions giving us a clear idea of some of the things he did, who his role model was (Churchill), his views on petrol prices and how he would like to change some aspects of the education system if ever he became Prime Minister.

.

At the end of the talk we presented him with a DVD of Rossall School as a memento of his visit.
