Unit of Enquiry: Project - Signs and Symbols
Visit to the Orthodox Synagogue, Blackpool

.
Year 4 had a fantastic time and saw many signs and symbols of Judaism including the Star of David, Menorah, Torah scrolls, Sender Plate, Kiddish Cup and Tallit (prayer shawl).
.
The Rabbi showed the Siddar a Jewish prayer book, he showed us the most important part of the synagogue the Ark, this is a cupboard covered by a curtain in which the Torah scrolls are kept. After this the Rabbi took us to the part of the synagogue where the boys prayed, they must always wear a hat called a Kippa to show respectt to God, they also wear a Tallit.

The Rabbi then showed us the celebration room and told us that if you have milk you have to wait half an hour before you can eat meat and if you eat meat first you have to wait three hours if you are a girl and six hours if you are a boy to eat/drink milk.

We also saw the Kiddish cup which is made of silver and used on the Sabbath which is on Friday evening.

We were then taken to where the girls sat and prayed and I found it funny that the girls could look down on the boys but the boys couldn’t look up at the girls.

I feel I have learnt a lot today about the Jewish religion, I found the Rabbi both interesting and informative and have realised that many things in a synagogue are important Jewish symbols.

Years 3 and 4 design and make their own sandwiches

Unit of Inquiry:  Health & Well-Being

Year 4 visited the Dining Hall as part of their Unit of Inquiry on Health and Well-Being  to practice making their own healthy sandwiches and learn more about nutrition.

The children designed the sandwich from a list of ingredients and then got to work making it and then eating it!

They were joined by Year 3 as their Unit of Inquiry is about energy and work and they have been thinking about how food gives us energy.
