CCF  BTEC

The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services is a programme of study that we aim to be completed by the end of the Lower Sixth year. Its purpose is to take young men and women of about 16 and 17 years of age whose career interests and academic ability may incline them towards commissions for entry into the Armed Forces, or working as Police Officers, or those who aspire to the higher ranks in other Public Services such as Fire, Ambulance, Prison or even Social Services, and give them a preparation for working in these or closely allied areas. Very valuable life skills can be gained from the course, which consists of the normal CCF timetable plus a small number of individual assignments.

It is a genuine alternative, or addition, to study at GCE AS / A Level and is suited to intelligent students with a practical / physical outlook on life. The course is designed specifically to prepare students for Public Service entry. It tends to be quite physical in orientation, however, and furthermore, in the lower sixth year, a great deal of leadership work with cadets is involved and personal assignments need to be completed to a March deadline. There is no examination work: just continuous assessment, monitoring and tasks.

What will I study?

The BTEC First Diploma includes the following core modules:

• Public Service Work
• Public Service Skills - this helps students to identify the skills needed for a public service career.
• Individual and Society - tthis unit will develop students' awareness of some of the main issues facing individuals and the public services in relation to society.
• Public Services Fitness - this focuses on how individuals can meet the physical entry requirements for some public services.

You will also study options from: Outdoor Activities (e.g. climbing), Sport and Recreation (rugby or hockey), Crime and Its Effects, and Information Communication Technology.

This course is designed to give students a basic understanding of the skills and knowledge that are required to embark on a career in the Public Services. Units focus on knowledge of the Public Services, sport / fitness, map work / navigation, driving / accidents and an understanding of modern society.

At the same time the range of different CCF activities, and the support given, aim to develop personal confidence, leadership and a wide range of interpersonal skills.

On completing the course the successful student could have gained: The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services (roughly equivalent to 4 subjects at GCSE Level grade C and above).
